So, please forgive me if this sounds too simplistic. I have been intrigued by this discussion, following it, and trying to understand it.

Is the bottom line goal to protect your images?

Are there other goals as well (if so what)?

Some edits didn't stay put. typed one thing, but WP munged it into something else. Installed version 2.7.1 (latest stable version) from version 2.2 and the munging stopped. I had that error a bunch of times as well... its basicly a problem with the swf linking to your script it cant find it. make sure your in wp-content/themes/*your current theme*/header.php add the lines in the head code and then you have to make a page and add the lines in the html code id also be h...

For what it is worth, I have confirmed that the upload button is missing in IE8.

In fact, I have checked the previous version which I have been using since starting (2.1) and it exhibits the same problem. Never saw it... use FTP stuff and FF mostly anyway. Yikes!
